Where ‘Good’ Becomes ‘Great!’
At Signsational Graphics, we pride ourselves in designing, producing and installing the highest quality, professional signs for our customers. So, what kinds of things should you consider to come out with a truly great sign?
Where will the sign be placed?
Placement is an extremely important factor to consider because it will dictate the overall design. The sign materials and color scheme should complement and stand out from the surroundings and the surface it is mounted on. It will also have to hold up in the given environment, whether it is placed indoors or outdoors.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Your goals for the sign will also play a large role in the design. You need a clear, concise message aimed at your target audience and it can be conveyed in text, images, or a combination of the two. The last thing you want to do is spend the time and money on having a sign produced and installed, only to find it isn’t actually adding to your business.
What is your budget?
This is one of the most basic, yet still important, aspects when planning out your new sign. You don’t want to get in over your head when it comes to the cost of materials and installation, but at the same time, you need to remember that the sign can pay for itself in the long run. If you’re having a hard time coming up with an amount, think of the cost in terms of per month, or even per day. If you spend $2,500 on a new sign and keep it for five years, you’re looking at about $1.37 per day; less than a cup of coffee!
After you have a clear goal in mind, you can look at the different elements of a sign and figure out what is right for your specific needs.
Will your sign be installed indoors or outdoors? This will have an effect on the materials used, especially because they need to fit with the environment and potential weather conditions. Outdoor signs also benefit from some type of illumination, making it advertise for you both day and night.
The colors used should fit in with your existing brand and marketing materials. This consistency reassures customers that your business is both reliable and trustworthy. If you are just starting out and haven’t really established a color scheme, there are certain color combinations that are considered to have the highest visibility:
|Black on Yellow||White on Blue||White on Brown||Yellow on Black||Red on White|
|Black on White||White on Green||Brown on Yellow||Yellow on Brown||Red on Yellow|
|Green on White||White on Red||Brown on White||Yellow on Red||Blue on Yellow|
It is important to pay attention to local rules and regulations regarding signage in order to avoid incurring any fines. Current regulations are easily found online or just ask us, the experts!
According to Roy Williams, founder of the Wizard of Ads ad agency, “Great signs are always the most interesting piece of scenery in their vicinity.” They’re dramatic, different, and they contrast with their surroundings. You don’t want to take it too far and commission a sign that is too wacky though, because you risk it being unreadable and more of an eyesore than a positive attention grabber. Make sure it is attractive, readable, visible, true to your brand, and with a clear and simple message that is easy to discern.
Of course, we are happy to assist you in the planning process, offering advice and guidance based on your input. We will do everything we can to ensure you are completely satisfied with the end product and that it will add to your marketing strategies. After all, “A business without a sign is a sign of no business!”
